Laetitia Tempelman – Staff Case Study – Belgrave School

Laetitia’s journey into specialist education wasn’t a traditional one. Originally from the Netherlands, she moved to the UK to study English Language and Literature, later completing a master’s in journalism. For over 20 years, she worked as a freelance journalist and copywriter for major publications like Reuters and Hearst.

However, the turning point came in 2020 when the pandemic disrupted her career. While home-schooling her eldest daughter, who had recently been diagnosed with dyslexia, Laetitia saw firsthand the challenges dyslexic learners face. Determined to help, she immersed herself in understanding dyslexia and discovered the power of multisensory teaching.

Inspired by this experience, she decided to change careers, completing a Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification and a Level 3 Specialist Dyslexia Support course with the British Dyslexia Association. After gaining experience at a specialist school, she joined Belgrave School, in a job she absolutely loves. Laetitia describes supporting dyslexic learners at Belgrave as rewarding, challenging, and deeply fulfilling. Knowing she is making a real difference in these learners’ lives is something she never experienced in her previous career.

Now, Laetitia is being supported by Belgrave School to deepen her expertise by pursuing a Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia Teaching, all while continuing her career at Belgrave. Her journey demonstrates that a passion for education and a desire to support learners can lead to a truly meaningful career.
