Belgrave School Enters a New Chapter Under New Principal, Expanding Specialist SEND Provision

Belgrave School in Bristol is entering an exciting new phase under the leadership of newly appointed Principal, Gwen Bennion, strengthening its position as a specialist, EHCP-led setting for learners aged 8–16 with a range of special educational needs.

While the school has a long and successful history of supporting learners with dyslexia and dyspraxia, its provision has evolved significantly. Today, Belgrave also supports children and young people with needs across Communication & Interaction, Cognition & Learning, and Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH), reflecting both the changing landscape of SEND and the needs of families across the region.

Gwen brings a wealth of experience supporting children and young people who learn differently or who face barriers to education. Throughout her career, she has remained committed to inclusive practice and to creating environments where every learner feels understood and valued.

Speaking about her appointment, Gwen said:

“Education has always been at the heart of who I am. Much of my career has been dedicated to supporting young people who learn differently or who face barriers to their education. I believe deeply in every child’s potential and in creating a school where each young person feels seen, understood and able to flourish.

One of the things I value most about Belgrave is its genuine warmth and strong sense of community. Our focus on wellbeing, independence and individual growth reflects everything I believe education should be. It is a privilege to work alongside such dedicated staff and supportive families as we continue to develop our specialist provision.”

Belgrave School offers:

  • Small, structured classes led by specialist staff

  • A trauma-informed, relational approach

  • Integrated therapeutic support

  • Personalised academic and wellbeing pathways
