Laetitia Tempelman – Staff Case Study – Belgrave School
Laetitia’s journey into specialist education wasn’t a traditional one. Originally from the Netherlands, she moved to the UK to study English Language and Literature, later completing a master’s in journalism. For over 20 years, she worked as a freelance journalist and copywriter for major publications like Reuters and Hearst.
However, the turning point came in 2020 when the pandemic disrupted her career. While home-schooling her eldest daughter, who had recently been diagnosed with dyslexia, Laetitia saw firsthand the challenges dyslexic learners face. Determined to help, she immersed herself in understanding dyslexia and discovered the power of multisensory teaching.
Inspired by this experience, she decided to change careers, completing a Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification and a Level 3 Specialist Dyslexia Support course with the British Dyslexia Association. After gaining experience at a specialist school, she joined Belgrave School, in a job she absolutely loves. Laetitia describes supporting dyslexic learners at Belgrave as rewarding, challenging, and deeply fulfilling. Knowing she is making a real difference in these learners’ lives is something she never experienced in her previous career.
Now, Laetitia is being supported by Belgrave School to deepen her expertise by pursuing a Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia Teaching, all while continuing her career at Belgrave. Her journey demonstrates that a passion for education and a desire to support learners can lead to a truly meaningful career.
Harriet – From Learning Support Assistant to Assistant Principal
When I joined Belgrave School 14 years ago, I started as a Learning Support Assistant. I was passionate about working with learners with additional needs but had no idea just how far this journey would take me.
Early on, the school supported me to complete a Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning, which gave me a solid foundation. I was then encouraged to take on more responsibility, and within a few years, I progressed to the role of Learning Support Mentor. This role allowed me to work more closely with individual learners and lead small group interventions, which I found incredibly rewarding.
Belgrave School continued to invest in my development. I completed training in exam access arrangements and was soon appointed as the Exams Officer. This was a big step up, and I loved the challenge of coordinating assessments and ensuring every learner had the support they needed to succeed.
Most recently, I was promoted to Assistant Principal. I had the privilege of shaping whole-school strategy and supporting staff development. Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come—and I’m so grateful to Belgrave for believing in me every step of the way.
Kurt – From Entry-Level Childcare to Specialist SEN Support
When I first joined Belgrave School 3 years ago, I had a few GCSEs and had completed some online courses in basic childcare. I was passionate about working with young people, but I didn’t have much formal experience or qualifications in education. I started as a Learning Support Assistant, eager to learn and grow.
From the beginning, the school believed in me. They funded my Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning, which gave me the confidence and skills to take on more responsibility. I was also given the opportunity to attend in-house and external training sessions focused on specific learning differences, including dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs.
As I gained experience, I became a go-to person for learners who needed emotional support or struggled with regulation. I worked closely with the SEN team and was trusted to lead small group interventions and contribute to EHCP reviews. I’ve since taken on a more specialist role, supporting learners with complex profiles.
Belgrave School has transformed my career. I came in with limited qualifications, and now I’m a confident, knowledgeable practitioner making a real difference in learners’ lives every day. I’m currently exploring further training in trauma-informed practice—and I know the school will be right behind me.
Priya – From Learning Support Assistant to SENCO
I had worked in a college teaching adults for a number of years but felt I had more to give. I started at Belgrave School 6 years ago as a Learning Support Assistant. I was passionate about supporting learners with additional needs, and from day one, I felt like I’d found the right place. I moved quickly into the role of Learning Support Mentor which enabled me to refine my organisational skills and working with individuals and small group activities.
Through further experience, I moved into the Specialist Intervention Lead role of Assistant Senco. I worked closely with learners with complex needs and helped develop bespoke support plans. The school encouraged me to pursue further training, and I am completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENCO), fully funded by Belgrave School. This is to enhance my training in autism awareness, trauma-informed practice, and person-centred planning.
Now, I’m proud to be the school’s SENCO. I lead our SEND provision, working very closely with families, and ensure every learner receives the support they need to thrive. Belgrave School has not only shaped my career—it’s shaped who I am as a professional.
