Belgrave School Year 10 Learners Explore Sustainable Food at Chew Valley Community Farm

Year 10 learners from Belgrave School recently enjoyed a hands-on and enriching visit to the Community Farm in Chew Valley, as part of their Square Food Foundation programme and Home Cooking BTEC curriculum. The trip offered a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-life experiences in sustainable food production and cooking.

During the visit, learners were given a guided tour of the working farm, exploring rows of fresh, seasonal vegetables and gaining a deeper understanding of how food is grown and harvested. They also spent time in the orchard, where they admired the apple trees and discussed the importance of local produce and seasonal eating.

The experience went beyond observation, with learners sampling a warming, homemade soup prepared with farm-fresh ingredients, giving them a literal taste of the farm-to-fork journey. They also took part in a baking session, where they made their own cheese scones — an enjoyable and practical way to build skills in the kitchen while reinforcing their curriculum.

The visit provided a meaningful extension to their studies, reinforcing key topics such as sustainability, nutrition, and food preparation in an engaging and memorable way.

Dionne Seagrove, Principal at Belgrave School, commented:
“This visit is a fantastic example of how we bring learning to life at Belgrave. Giving our learners opportunities to experience real-world contexts deepens understanding, builds confidence, and shows them how their education connects to everyday life. The enthusiasm and curiosity our learners showed on the day was a joy to see.”

The trip reflects Belgrave School’s ongoing commitment to providing purposeful, practical learning experiences that inspire young people and support their development beyond the classroom.
